4 Typical Interview Questions and How Not to Answer Them
4 Typical Interview Questions and How Not to Answer Them Interviews can feel like torture, but they are a crucial part of the job search process. The good nachrichten is that there are some common bewerbungsgesprch questions that get asked at almost every bewerbungsinterview. The bad news is, despite these questions being all over the internet, many candidates still give some summarily awful answers. Here are some questions hiring managers often ask, answers you should avoid at all costs, and how to prepare a good response.1. Tell me about your weaknesses/growth edges/areas for development.Bad answerThere are three ways to answer this question really badly. The first is to completely deflect or avoid the question. The second is to come up with a trivial weakness or to pass off a strength as a weakness. Examples are things like, I can just be very particular about how pencils are positioned on my desk, or, Well, sometimes I can just be too organized. In both cases, the hiring manager w alks away wondering, Does this person have so little insight that they cant recognize areas for growth? Or, even worse, Does this person have weaknesses so scary they need to hide them from me?The third bad answer to this question is to state a weakness but leid explain how youre working on it. Now, the hiring manager will end up thinking, This person has weaknesses but isnt mature enough to do something about them. What the hiring manager is looking forWhen hiring managers ask candidates to talk about areas for growth, they are generally looking for two things. First, they are testing candidates for self-awareness. Everyone has areas for growth. Not everyone has the maturity and insight to recognize areas for improvement and discuss them openly. Second, they are looking for people who take responsibility for their weaknesses and take initiative to improve and improving will maybe even increase your odds of becoming CEO some day.Good answerHeres a sample good response to this questi on. Well, one area I have been actively working on is making sure I meet deadlines and appropriately prioritize my work. I once missed a deadline because I welches feeling overwhelmed by my workload and hadnt communicated this well to my supervisor. After that experience, I learned to keep my supervisor up to date on my projects, so we could set priorities. I also now use task management software to keep track of what I am working on. I have notlageiced some real improvement in my ability to get tasks accomplished. This response works well for a couple of reasons. First, it directly answers the question and discusses an actual weakness. Second, lots of people have missed a deadline, so, in the majority of jobs, this would not be a complete deal-breaker. Third, and most importantly, the candidate has identified ways they can work on this area and has noticed an improvement.2. Describe a conflict you had at work and how handled it.Bad answerThis is another tricky question that candidat es frequently deflect, avoid, or answer with, Ive never really had a conflict at work. Any of these responses will leave the hiring manager thinking, This candidate either a) has no self-awareness, b) has had some pretty scary conflicts they dont want to tell me about or c) has never cared about anything at work enough to have a conflict about it.Another less than optimal way to answer this question is to frame the person you were having a conflict with as being completely in the wrong. The hiring manager will leave that interaction thinking, This is a candidate who cant compromise or see other peoples points of view. Its also not great to present a conflict that welches never really resolved. This might leave the hiring manager worrying that a conflict with you could simmer for weeks or even months. What the hiring manager is looking forJust as everyone has weaknesses, everyone also experiences conflicts at work. In fact, conflicts can be a critical part of the creative process, so long as you know how to resolve conflicts. As with the weakness question, part of what the hiring manager wants you to demonstrate is self-awareness. If you get hired, the manager is also probably wise in assuming that you will someday be in conflict with them. So, they also want to make sure you have reasonable conflict resolution skills. This means that they want you to demonstrate that you can a) empathize with the other persons point of view, b) express disagreement while maintaining a professional demeanor, and c) come to a resolution that feels at least ok to everyone.Good answerHeres an example of a great answer to this question, I welches working with a customer who wanted us to make a change to our fill in the blank on an internal process/product. I obviously was very interested in keeping this customer happy, but the fill in the blank on the internal team involved was pretty upset when I presented the requested changes to them. They let me know that they had a lot of other things going on and that they just didnt have time to address the customers concerns. This, of course, made me very worried, as this was an important customer, and I didnt want to lose the account. I had a conversation with the head of internal team explaining that I understood how busy internal team was at this time and that it might not be possible to fulfill all the customers requests. At the same time, I reminded her what an important customer this was, and that I at least wanted them to feel like their concerns were being heard. The head of internal team agreed to allow me to facilitate a direct meeting between her and the customer, so they could come to a better understanding of both the customers concerns and our internal teams capacity to address them. During the meeting, the customer and head of internal team were able to come to some reasonable compromises that actually led to some great improvements. At the same time, our internal team was able to negotiate a timeline on those changes that felt comfortable for them. My customer even sent me a thank you note saying she was really grateful to talk to the internal team directly and better understand our company processes. This response is fantastic for many reasonsThe candidate got into a conflict for a great reason they wanted to please their customer. The candidate clearly understood both the customers and the internal teams points of views.Instead of trying to force one side to give in,the candidate facilitated a conversation between all the parties involved. The candidate knows how to be an effective communicator and is able to show how everyone came to a reasonable resolution.3. Why did you leave/want to leave your last/currentjob?Bad answerIts rare for someone to leave a job because things were going really fantastically. Its also rare for someone to look for a new position if they are completely satisfied with their current job. However, its a pretty bad idea to answer this question by completely bashing your current/previous manager or company. Responses like, My manager just didnt know how to manage me, or, I was bored to tears at my last job, are not likely to impress a hiring manager. Its also generally not a great idea to say something like, Well, Im looking for a new job because I got fired for a huge mistake at my last job. What the hiring manager is looking forWhen hiring managers ask this question, they want to make sure their company is a better fit for you than your previous or current job. They also want to screen out very scary characteristics in potential employees. Onboarding new employees is generally a large financial investment, and the hiring manager wants to make sure you wont leave quickly. They also want to make sure youll be able to do your basic job functions, get along reasonably well with your co-workers, and not get the company into a lawsuit. Anyone asking this question will expect you to have some element of your previous employment that made you unhappy. However, they will also want some reassurance that this job will work better for you.Good answerAnswering this question well generally involves softening and reframing your actual reason for leaving. It is also better to spend mora time discussing what excites you about the new role rather than what you hate about your current/old position. For example, if you feel micromanaged at work, say something like, I receive a lot of very close supervision in my current role. This was really helpful initially as I was learning to do my job, but Im excited to try a position with mora autonomy. Thats part of why this new role was so interesting to me. This sounds much better than, My boss is way over-controlling and I cant wait to have more breathing room in a new position. If you feel bored at work or want a raise, say something like, I have learned a lot in my current role but am now looking to grow in my career and try some new responsibilities. This sounds much better than, I have nothing to do at my current job other than play on my phone to fill the time, or, I really just need more money. If you are working intensely long hours and want a more flexible work schedule, say something like, There are many things about my current job that I enjoy, but I was really excited about your companys emphasis on work-life balance and employee engagement when I reviewed your website. This answer obviously works much better if you actually did review the companys website, and it did say something about work-life balance. If you were fired, laid off or some other variation of job termination types, its important to be balanced and honest in your description of what happened. Just like when describing conflicts or weaknesses, you want to demonstrate self-awareness as well as discuss what you are doing to improve.4. Do you have any questions for us?Bad answerThe absolute worst way to answer this question is, No, no questions from me. This will generally make hiring managers th ink you havent done your research before the interview or that youre not interested in the job. It is also generally not appropriate to ask about compensation and benefits in the early stages of the interviewing process. What the hiring manager is looking forWhen a hiring manager asks you for questions, they are giving you the opportunity to have a dialogue with them. They want to see that you are actually interested in the job and that you have done some initial research about the company.Good answerThe best way to answer this question well is to review the companys website before the interview. Jot down two to three questions based on the information on the website. A great, go-to question is also, What are your favorite things about working here? Not only will this help end your interview on a positive note, but it will also give you valuable insights into the companys culture. If youre stuck, we have interview questions to ask for every stage of the interview process. If youve rec ently been invited to an interview, congratulations While interview questions can be difficult to answer, with a little preparation you can make a great first impression.Of course, there will be some interview questions you wont see coming, but if youre prepared and confident, youl nail it and get the job of your dreams.--Rebecca Fraynt has a PhD in Clinical Psychology and is an all-around healthcare nerd. 7 lessons from Melinda Gatess first book, The Moment of Lift
7 lessons from Melinda Gatess first book, The Moment of Lift7 lessons from Melinda Gatess first book, The Moment of LiftMelinda Gates is on a learning journey to empower womenand shes asking us all to come along. On April 24, Gates sat down with Bren Brown, author of Dare to Lead and four otzu sichbeibei best-sellers, to discuss herbei own new book, TheMoment of Lift. Gatess first book discusses the complexities of feminism and the phenomenon thatcommunities can only flourishwhen women are lifted alongside men.Brown, who just became the first researcher to film her own talk on Netflix, commented on Gatess first work, which welches released on April 23. My first response was, I see you Melinda Gatesand I like you, Brown said.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBrowns reaction sums up how most readers will feel after reading The Moment of Lift. For the first time, Melinda Gates is allo wing her name and voice to be the face of a worldwide campaign- one that aims to deliver contraceptives to any woman who seeks them. While she has worked behind the scenes of the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation since its genesis in 1997, Gates chose to remain out of the spotlight in order to protect her children. As Gates began her work in family planning, she realized there was no other advocate but herself, which eventually leuchtdiode to The Moment of Lift.Gates ArchiveHere are seven key takeaways from the famed philanthropists first-ever bookFeminism is more complex on a global scaleAround the world, feminism is about more than equal pay. While workplace gender inequity is an issue that must receive our attention, Gates also discusses issues that are farther removed for most, including the lack of access to contraceptives and child marriages.Theres no silver bullet for lifting women up, Gates said. That being said, she has a few ideas of where to start.First, a major issue that d emands attention is womens access to contraceptives. Truly, women all over the world would demand to talk about the lack of access to contraceptives, even when Gates was there to discuss vaccines or how to stop the spread of HIV.Eventually, after hearing enough compelling stories, and seeing data to back up those narratives, Gates realized it was time to make contraceptives a priority for the foundation.Additionally, women have to be able to control their own finances, which is where digital financial literacy comes into play. When women have money, it changes the power dynamic in a family, Gates said. The largest feminist act right now is providing contraceptives to womenGates learned about the power of contraceptives by visiting villages and speaking with women about their struggles. Not only does family planning save and elevate womens lives, but also, by extension, the lives of all those in a community. One thing became apparent while Gates was researching how the foundation could help this cause she had to come out of her comfort zone and become a public advocate.Suddenly, friends, colleagues, and activists were pressing me to become a public advocate for family planning, and that alarmed me, Gates wrote. The reason it alarmed Gates was elend only due to the political nature surrounding contraceptives but also because of her deep involvement with the Catholic Church.I wasnt scared, Gates said. I was terrified. After 18 months of wrestling with her faith, Gates decided that the ban on contraceptives was a man-made rule, not one rooted in religion.Im not going to let women and babies die because of a religious belief, Gates said. That makes no sense to me.Digital financial literacy allows women to set their own agendasIf you dont set your own agenda, someone else will, is animportant lesson that dates back to Gatess childhood, when her mother would repeat this to her often.Gates took this lesson to heart, which is how she landed on worldwide family planning as her focus area. Having the privilege to space her three pregnancies allowed her to craft the career, family and life that she wanted, and she believes all women should have access to that privilege.Gates told a story of a mother in India who was able to have her own assets, which she used to buy her oldest son a bike. Immediately, that mother was treated with more respect from her children, husband, and mother-in-law. Gates also referenced more serious events, in which a woman is able to secure her assets from her in-laws after her husbands death. Financial independence gives women power, and it makes a difference.Set intentions, not goalsFor the past eight years, Melinda Gates has not set a single goal.Gates discussed how she used to set (and reach) plenty of goals. For example, in high school she set a goal to study computer science at a top notch university. In 1982, after graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she enrolled at Duke University.Instead of goals, Gate s now sets intentions to lead the direction of her life.An intention is saying, I want to be in the world a certain way and act a certain way.Gatess current intention is to continue on a learning journey through her worldwide family planning work.In order to lift a society up, you cant hold women downWomen make up more than half of the population but are being underutilized in most cultures. Gates argues its time to break down barriers so that communities can reach their full potential. This is not about bringing women in and leaving others out. Its about bringing women in as a way to bring everyone in, Gates wrote.Data proves facts, but stories change heartsThroughout her work, Gates has conquered the balancing act that exists between using data and telling stories to identify issues and persuade others to help.Even data about women comes with a bias, according to Gates. You need a quantitative mix with qualitative so that you get a full picture of peoples lives, Gates said. The book , and Gates herself are filled with statistics, for example, that less than 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women. Data helps to identify the scale of an issue, but Gatess call to action rests on the many stories from women she has met. Stories are data with a soul, Gates said.Melinda Gates believes the moment of lift is right nowGates has emerged as a public advocate for this fight because equality cant wait.Even at the current rate were getting women into Congress, which looks promising, its still going to take us 60 years to reach equality in Congress, Gates said during her Tuesday appearance on Good Morning America. And thats too long. The Moment of Lift comes from Gates background with space launches. Those moments always gave me a thrill- especially that moment of lift when the engines ignite, the earth shakes, and the rocket starts to rise, Gates wrote. The moment we broke through gravity. Thats what I want to see for women and girls around the world. In the book, Gates argues that its time to make that lift, not just for women, but for all humanity. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Nail Your Creative Job Interview
How to Nail Your Creative Job InterviewHow to Nail Your Creative Job InterviewDo you have a big creative job interview coming up? Whether its an in-person meeting or video interview, dont stress. Be prepared. Nail everything from the first impression to the final question with these five job interview tips. For most creative professionals, interviewing can be stressful. Organizations and hiring managers have unique ways of evaluating candidates, and it can be difficult to know what youre getting yourself into and how to prepare for each one. For example, should you wear a suit if you know the position youre interviewing for is at a bona fide jeans-and-hoodie start-up? How about connecting with your interviewers on LinkedIn before the meeting? There are plenty of things to keep in mind before you arrive, so here are five interview tips to think about as you head into that upcoming creative job interview.1. Do your homeworkShow up prepared by researching beyond-the-basics information abo ut the position and company. Dont just visit their website and social media pages search the company personenname so youre informed of recent events such as acquisitions or a newly appointed CEO. Also ask people in your network if they have any insight about the organization. Maybe a former classmate used to work for the company and can give you insights. Then, as relevant interview questions come up, strategically share your knowledge about the company.2. Be aware of your body languageYour nonverbal communication matters. Subtle cues, such as eye contact, facial expressions and posture, will affect how others perceive you. Do you tend to bite your nails or fiddle with your pen? If so, be aware so you can avoid distracting behaviors. Make sure youre coming across as confident, secure and capable. Demonstrate these traits bySmiling genuinelyMaking eye contactNot fidgetingSitting up straight (No slouching)And, of course, offering a firm handshakeSEARCH OUR CREATIVE JOB OPENINGS3. Tel l stories in the job interviewDont just tell the interviewer that youre an excellent front-end web developer or copywriter, show him or her by referencing real-life examples of the impact youve made. Share anecdotes that provide specific examples of how youve helped solve business problems. Describe the challenge, talk about your process and actions, and outline the final results.4. Ask thoughtful questionsThis is not the time to inquire about salary. (You dont have the job yet) Rather, follow the interview questions with some thoughtful questions of your own. Ask the hiring manager to describe an aspect of the job that might surprise you or what the teams process is for collaborating on projects. If you have a chance to meet with someone youd be working with, ask for their take on company culture or what their biggest challenges are. Such questions help reinforce your interest in the position and the company.5. Be yourselfThe key to making a strong first impression is to simply sho w the real you. Try to avoid rehearsed responses and fluffy jargon. Instead interact in a way thats honest and genuine. If you can somehow tie a hobby to the job requirements, like photography or youth mentorship, for example, it can be an interesting conversation point. Tags
