How to Become an iOS Developer

How to Become an iOS DeveloperHow to Become an iOS DeveloperMaking up roughly 12.5% of the smartphone operating system market as of November 2016, iOS development is still very much an in-demand role, with many companies building their mobile development departments to keep up with the demands of the market. If youre interested in becoming an iOS developer, here are a few tips on how you can get started. Learn Objective-C Objective-C is the standard programming language for iOS and OSX products, respectively. There are lots of resources where you can learn more about it, like this Code School resource that turns learning Objective-C basics into a neat game. This is the first distribution policy you should start if youre interested in becoming an iOS developer. Swift is the Future With the release of Swift in 2014, you may think that learning Objective-C may not be worth your time. Not so fast, though, Roadfire Software recommends that you familiarize yourself with both, espec ially since Swift hasnt completely replaced Objective-C just yet ... you need to know Swift or Objective-C (knowing both would be best). For a junior level position, you should at least know the syntax and a good deal of the Foundation framework (objects, collections, data types, networking, JSON). In addition to this, you need to know basic object-oriented concepts, like what an object is, what a class is, and how to write methods. Treehouse has a Swift course that you could preview if youre interested in learning more. Practice Now that youve familiarized yourself with Objective-C or Swift (or maybe both), you should practice as much as possible. Build your own apps, post them to the App Store, tweak as much as possible. This is the best way to familiarize yourself with everything an iOS developer needs to know about app design and maintenance. It also keeps your coding skills sharp, which is always a good bonus. Be parte of the Community GitHub is one of the largest codi ng communities online. It offers version history and a large community that can help you along the way with testing your apps and programs. Anyone whos interested in a coding career uses GitHub, and that should be reason enough for you to use it. But it also can be a huge help if youre stuck on a problem that you arent sure how to fix. Volunteer Your Services A great way to get portfolio pieces and real-world experience are to volunteer your services to non-profits and local business. Sure, you wont make any money, but youll build that list of contacts and references that are so important to getting any job, especially one in iOS development. As Andrew G. Rosen writes Your strategy is get as many notable references as to your iOS developer skills, as well as showcase public relations abilities. Showing employers that youre able to promote yourself and interact with clients is key. Conclusion There are numerous other things you can do to get started as an iOS developer, but t hese tips are indeed vital if you intend to start a career in the field. Learn as much as you can about everything there is to know about iOS development, and youll most certainly be on the way to becoming a developer in no time.

7 lessons from Melinda Gatess first book, The Moment of Lift

7 lessons from Melinda Gatess first book, The Moment of Lift7 lessons from Melinda Gatess first book, The Moment of LiftMelinda Gates is on a learning journey to empower womenand shes asking us all to come along. On April 24, Gates sat down with Bren Brown, author of Dare to Lead and four otzu sichbeibei best-sellers, to discuss herbei own new book, TheMoment of Lift. Gatess first book discusses the complexities of feminism and the phenomenon thatcommunities can only flourishwhen women are lifted alongside men.Brown, who just became the first researcher to film her own talk on Netflix, commented on Gatess first work, which welches released on April 23. My first response was, I see you Melinda Gatesand I like you, Brown said.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBrowns reaction sums up how most readers will feel after reading The Moment of Lift. For the first time, Melinda Gates is allo wing her name and voice to be the face of a worldwide campaign- one that aims to deliver contraceptives to any woman who seeks them. While she has worked behind the scenes of the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation since its genesis in 1997, Gates chose to remain out of the spotlight in order to protect her children. As Gates began her work in family planning, she realized there was no other advocate but herself, which eventually leuchtdiode to The Moment of Lift.Gates ArchiveHere are seven key takeaways from the famed philanthropists first-ever bookFeminism is more complex on a global scaleAround the world, feminism is about more than equal pay. While workplace gender inequity is an issue that must receive our attention, Gates also discusses issues that are farther removed for most, including the lack of access to contraceptives and child marriages.Theres no silver bullet for lifting women up, Gates said. That being said, she has a few ideas of where to start.First, a major issue that d emands attention is womens access to contraceptives. Truly, women all over the world would demand to talk about the lack of access to contraceptives, even when Gates was there to discuss vaccines or how to stop the spread of HIV.Eventually, after hearing enough compelling stories, and seeing data to back up those narratives, Gates realized it was time to make contraceptives a priority for the foundation.Additionally, women have to be able to control their own finances, which is where digital financial literacy comes into play. When women have money, it changes the power dynamic in a family, Gates said. The largest feminist act right now is providing contraceptives to womenGates learned about the power of contraceptives by visiting villages and speaking with women about their struggles. Not only does family planning save and elevate womens lives, but also, by extension, the lives of all those in a community. One thing became apparent while Gates was researching how the foundation could help this cause she had to come out of her comfort zone and become a public advocate.Suddenly, friends, colleagues, and activists were pressing me to become a public advocate for family planning, and that alarmed me, Gates wrote. The reason it alarmed Gates was elend only due to the political nature surrounding contraceptives but also because of her deep involvement with the Catholic Church.I wasnt scared, Gates said. I was terrified. After 18 months of wrestling with her faith, Gates decided that the ban on contraceptives was a man-made rule, not one rooted in religion.Im not going to let women and babies die because of a religious belief, Gates said. That makes no sense to me.Digital financial literacy allows women to set their own agendasIf you dont set your own agenda, someone else will, is animportant lesson that dates back to Gatess childhood, when her mother would repeat this to her often.Gates took this lesson to heart, which is how she landed on worldwide family planning as her focus area. Having the privilege to space her three pregnancies allowed her to craft the career, family and life that she wanted, and she believes all women should have access to that privilege.Gates told a story of a mother in India who was able to have her own assets, which she used to buy her oldest son a bike. Immediately, that mother was treated with more respect from her children, husband, and mother-in-law. Gates also referenced more serious events, in which a woman is able to secure her assets from her in-laws after her husbands death. Financial independence gives women power, and it makes a difference.Set intentions, not goalsFor the past eight years, Melinda Gates has not set a single goal.Gates discussed how she used to set (and reach) plenty of goals. For example, in high school she set a goal to study computer science at a top notch university. In 1982, after graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she enrolled at Duke University.Instead of goals, Gate s now sets intentions to lead the direction of her life.An intention is saying, I want to be in the world a certain way and act a certain way.Gatess current intention is to continue on a learning journey through her worldwide family planning work.In order to lift a society up, you cant hold women downWomen make up more than half of the population but are being underutilized in most cultures. Gates argues its time to break down barriers so that communities can reach their full potential. This is not about bringing women in and leaving others out. Its about bringing women in as a way to bring everyone in, Gates wrote.Data proves facts, but stories change heartsThroughout her work, Gates has conquered the balancing act that exists between using data and telling stories to identify issues and persuade others to help.Even data about women comes with a bias, according to Gates. You need a quantitative mix with qualitative so that you get a full picture of peoples lives, Gates said. The book , and Gates herself are filled with statistics, for example, that less than 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women. Data helps to identify the scale of an issue, but Gatess call to action rests on the many stories from women she has met. Stories are data with a soul, Gates said.Melinda Gates believes the moment of lift is right nowGates has emerged as a public advocate for this fight because equality cant wait.Even at the current rate were getting women into Congress, which looks promising, its still going to take us 60 years to reach equality in Congress, Gates said during her Tuesday appearance on Good Morning America. And thats too long. The Moment of Lift comes from Gates background with space launches. Those moments always gave me a thrill- especially that moment of lift when the engines ignite, the earth shakes, and the rocket starts to rise, Gates wrote. The moment we broke through gravity. Thats what I want to see for women and girls around the world. In the book, Gates argues that its time to make that lift, not just for women, but for all humanity. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Nail Your Creative Job Interview

How to Nail Your Creative Job InterviewHow to Nail Your Creative Job InterviewDo you have a big creative job interview coming up? Whether its an in-person meeting or video interview, dont stress. Be prepared. Nail everything from the first impression to the final question with these five job interview tips. For most creative professionals, interviewing can be stressful. Organizations and hiring managers have unique ways of evaluating candidates, and it can be difficult to know what youre getting yourself into and how to prepare for each one. For example, should you wear a suit if you know the position youre interviewing for is at a bona fide jeans-and-hoodie start-up? How about connecting with your interviewers on LinkedIn before the meeting? There are plenty of things to keep in mind before you arrive, so here are five interview tips to think about as you head into that upcoming creative job interview.1. Do your homeworkShow up prepared by researching beyond-the-basics information abo ut the position and company. Dont just visit their website and social media pages search the company personenname so youre informed of recent events such as acquisitions or a newly appointed CEO. Also ask people in your network if they have any insight about the organization. Maybe a former classmate used to work for the company and can give you insights. Then, as relevant interview questions come up, strategically share your knowledge about the company.2. Be aware of your body languageYour nonverbal communication matters. Subtle cues, such as eye contact, facial expressions and posture, will affect how others perceive you. Do you tend to bite your nails or fiddle with your pen? If so, be aware so you can avoid distracting behaviors. Make sure youre coming across as confident, secure and capable. Demonstrate these traits bySmiling genuinelyMaking eye contactNot fidgetingSitting up straight (No slouching)And, of course, offering a firm handshakeSEARCH OUR CREATIVE JOB OPENINGS3. Tel l stories in the job interviewDont just tell the interviewer that youre an excellent front-end web developer or copywriter, show him or her by referencing real-life examples of the impact youve made. Share anecdotes that provide specific examples of how youve helped solve business problems. Describe the challenge, talk about your process and actions, and outline the final results.4. Ask thoughtful questionsThis is not the time to inquire about salary. (You dont have the job yet) Rather, follow the interview questions with some thoughtful questions of your own. Ask the hiring manager to describe an aspect of the job that might surprise you or what the teams process is for collaborating on projects. If you have a chance to meet with someone youd be working with, ask for their take on company culture or what their biggest challenges are. Such questions help reinforce your interest in the position and the company.5. Be yourselfThe key to making a strong first impression is to simply sho w the real you. Try to avoid rehearsed responses and fluffy jargon. Instead interact in a way thats honest and genuine. If you can somehow tie a hobby to the job requirements, like photography or youth mentorship, for example, it can be an interesting conversation point. Tags

What Posh Spice Knows About Starting a New Gig

What Posh Spice Knows About Starting a New Gig What Posh Spice Knows About Starting a New Gig Before Tuesday nights American Idol premiere, I knew precisely 3 things about Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice)1) She used to be the in Spice Girls.2) Shes married to David Beckham.3) Shes a clueless and cold-hearted clothes hanger with no personality.I have no idea wzu siche I got that last one from because I have never paid the woman one iota of attention, but there it is, in my brain anyway. Or there it welches until Tuesday night when she appeared as a guest judge on my favorite guilty pleasure TV show. And then a funny thing happened I found I kind of liked Posh. She was endearing (if so skinny that I want to force feed her sandwiches) and she was enjoyable to watch.Which got me thinking about this time last year, when Kara DioGuardia joined the Idol panel. What a difference For some reason, Kara grated on my last nerve from the first moment I saw her. I soon learned I wasnt alone one well-known Idol video blogger took to flashing a monkey banging symbols on-screen every time he spoke of her. Poor KaraSo what was the difference? To me there was one glaring difference between the way the two women integrated themselves (or didnt) into a new environment. Something we all have to do regularly during our careers.Poshs secret didnt actually gel with me until this afternoon when I was finishing up a resume for a senior executive client. My clients specialty is change management, and when she completed our information-gathering questionnaire, she talked about how she successfully led major changes without alienating old-time employees. She said I honor the existing culture before I attempt to change it.And thats when I realized the difference between the two new American Idol judges Victoria Beckham honored the existing dynamic while Kara seemed oblivious to it.I think this is so important for any of us to remember. Especially when we start a new job or freelance project , or begin working with a new client. You win people over by honoring what exists as you find your place. What does that mean specifically?I broke it down into three specific actions I observed although you may think of others.A lack of aggressionVictoria waited until it was her turn to speak and then kept her opinions relatively uncontroversial. Kara seemed to insert herself quite aggressively into situations from her very first day and actually got into a yelling match with one wanna-be pop star on one of her earliest appearances. When starting a new job or freelance project, its wise to keep ideas and opinions to yourself for a while. There is nothing more annoying to long-time employees than hearing your unsolicited ideas on day one, because that sounds very much like criticism. If asked for suggestions, by all means give them. But otherwise, watch, listen and observe. Some of your ideas might not seem so great after you learn more about the situation and the ones that are great? Well, you can figure out a way to introduce those once you know more about the culture.Respect for the place others have in the scheme of thingsVictoria also respected the different personas each member of the panel had created and seemed relaxed and non-competitive. She didnt try to out-nasty Simon Cowell, or out-drawl Randy Jackson. By contrast, in her first appearances, Kara seemed to veer between acting like Simon or mimicking Paula. Its natural to be nervous in a new environment, but dont be so eager to impress that you find yourself usurping the roles others have held for a long time. You will find your place in good time.Humility SellsAt least when it comes to human relationships. Victoria didnt brag or make the whole thing about herself. Shes actually a very successful businesswoman and has built a strong brand quite apart from her husband. But she never mentioned any of that in criticizing the singers. By contrast Kara seems to mention her own background as a professional s ongwriter at every turn.Just guessing, but I assume Kara did that because she felt nervous and wanted to make sure the other judges and the viewers respected her. But demanding respect never works. You earn respect through your actions and the results you deliver. Never boast about past successes your new co-workers dont care. They are only interested in what they see for themselves and they will respect you more for your humility. So, Posh Spice, it turns out, is not aclueless and cold-hearted clothes hanger with no personality and also, I learned something, proving to my nay-saying friends and family that American Idol isnt a complete waste of my time ??
